Taylor Fritz discloses the discussions he had with his coach following a crushing defeat in the US Open final.

The 26-year-old was three sets away from becoming the first American man to triumph at Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick in 2003.

He fought to the very end but Jannik Sinner was too strong for Fritz in New York, who claimed a straight sets victory.

Sinner became the first Italian man to win the US Open and in the process claimed his second major of the 2024 season.

What has Taylor Fritz’s coach said to him since losing the US Open final?

Taylor Fritz battled past the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and compatriot Frances Tiafoe to reach his first Grand Slam final.

Despite having the New York crowd on his side and feeling confident about his tennis, he was unable to put Sinner under sustained pressure.

Though he improved in each set, Fritz suffered a 3-6, 4-6, 5-7 defeat and was distraught during the trophy presentation and claimed that he ‘let everyone down.’

Despite feeling upset about the loss, Fritz’s coach Michael Russell has encouraged him to take the positives from the best Grand Slam campaign of his career.

“The main thing I take from the whole US Open experience is that I don’t necessarily think I played incredible tennis to get to the final,” Fritz said during the pre-Laver Cup press conference. “I’ve had a couple of days’ good practice in Miami.

“Mike [Russell, his coach] and I talked a bit about the next steps, things I need to work on, and trying to take some positives, even though I was disappointed with the final. I played very within myself, so it was a huge positive that I could get to that point without playing amazing tennis.”

When does Taylor Fritz play his first match in the 2024 Laver Cup?

Fritz is set to play his first match since the US Open final when he represents Team World in the Laver Cup.

The World number seven will make his fourth Laver Cup appearance and Fritz will begin the campaign alongside Ben Shelton in doubles action against Team Europe’s Zverev and Laver Cup debutant Carlos Alcaraz.

Fritz has won three of his four matches in his Laver Cup career and will be keen to start his 2024 campaign with a win on Friday evening.

“We’ve been trying to play together for a while,” Fritz said about playing doubles with Shelton. “I’ve always thought we’d make a good team, so I think it’s exciting to finally get our first go.”
