Carlos Alcaraz is determined to help Team Europe regain the Laver Cup on very first attempt.

Most of the world’s top players have competed in the unique team event since its inception in 2017, but Alcaraz’s name was missing from that list.

But 2024 is the year where the Spaniard will compete in the Laver Cup for the first time and he will be part of an impressive European team featuring the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov.

The 21-year-old will also feature in the competition in what is the final year that Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe will be captains of Team Europe and Team World respectively.

What is Carlos Alcaraz’s main goal for Team Europe at the Laver Cup?

Carlos Alcaraz thrives in team environments as illustrated by the Olympic Games and recent Davis Cup group stages.

He rediscovered some of his best tennis in Valencia this past week as Spain cruised into the ‘Final 8’ of the Davis Cup.

But now he is representing Team Europe at the Laver Cup and the four-time Grand Slam champion has one mission in mind, to help his team win the competition for the first time since 2021.

“I’m really excited to be part of this event. I’m looking forward to meeting the fellas here. When I watch it on TV it is a really good atmosphere between us, supporting (each other) during the whole match,” Alcaraz told Eurosport.

“That’s the goal. I’m going to do whatever it takes or whatever I have in my hand to help Team Europe to bring back the trophy and let’s see – it’s going to be a tough one. I think we have a really good team that we can bring it back.”

Carlos Alcaraz aims to continue momentum at the Laver Cup

Alcaraz’s summer went from one extreme to the other as it began by claiming the French Open and Wimbledon titles.

But after Novak Djokovic defeated Alcaraz to become Olympic champion in a thrilling match, the Spaniard produced some poor results in North America.

He lost his first match at the Cincinnati Open before suffering a shock second-round exit at the US Open.

Alcaraz had little time to dwell on these results and he returned home to represent Spain in the Davis Cup and went undefeated through the group stages to help Spain progress. This is just what he needs as he heads into the final portion of the 2024 season.
