Mirra Andreeva has given herself a new status on the WTA Tour after winning the biggest title of her career at Indian Wells.

Andreeva beat Aryna Sabalenka to win Indian Wells, and extend her winning streak to 12 matches after continuing her run from the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Despite being on a high due to her current run, Andreeva has been criticized for something that she did in the Indian Wells final.

The Russian teenager will look to put that behind her, with Andreeva’s Indian Wells victory causing her to make history in the WTA rankings.

Mirra Andreeva sets WTA record last achieved by Maria Sharapova

Andreeva first broke through as a 15-year-old, and two years later is one of the best players in the world.

As a result of winning two consecutive WTA 1000 titles, Andreeva has climbed to a career-high ranking of world number six.

At 17-years-old, Andreeva is the youngest player to be inside the top six of the WTA singles rankings since Maria Sharapova in March 2005.

Sharapova, who congratulated Andreeva after her Indian Wells victory, first reached this milestone in November 2004 and was world number one for the first time in August 2005, when she was just 18-years-old.

While she is not there just yet, Sabalenka has predicted big things for Andreeva, including reaching the summit of the WTA rankings.

Coco Gauff also had a very early breakthrough as a teenager, but was unable to reach the top six of the WTA rankings until January 2023, when she was slightly older than Andreeva at 18-years-old.

Could Mirra Andreeva improve her ranking even further at the Miami Open?

Despite being on the WTA Tour since 2023, Andreeva will be making her Miami Open debut this year after withdrawing from last year’s tournament due to a wrist injury.

There is the potential for Andreeva to make history at the Miami Open, as she bids to become only the fifth women’s singles player to achieve the sunshine double.

With no points coming off from the tournament last year, Andreeva also has the chance to capitalise on her absence at the 2024 Miami Open.

If Andreeva reaches the final of the Miami Open, there is slim but possible chance that she could overtake both Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula to become the new world number four.
