Andy Murray has unsurprisingly dominated the headlines at Wimbledon ahead of his impending retirement.

The Scot left tennis fans devastated with his decision to withdraw from the singles event, with Murray failing to recover from injury.

One day after his scheduled first round opener, however, the Scot made it onto the court in time to play doubles.

His partnership with brother Jamie delighted their mother Judy, who was in attendance as the pair took on John Peers and Rinky Hijikata on centre court.

But the Australian duo were on hand to ruin the Wimbledon party as they defeated the Murray brothers 7-6(8-6), 6-4.

Andy still plans to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon, having confirmed his partnership with fellow Briton Emma Raducanu.

But the tributes have already been pouring in for the 37-year-old following his men’s doubles defeat, with Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek both sending messages to the Scot.

Writing on X, the Spaniard said: “Andy! Such an inspiration and example for everyone! what a career and what a legacy!”

Swiatek also took to X to pay tribute, saying: “Andyyy. We couldn’t wish for better support for women’s tennis.

“Thank you for everything, it was a privilege to stand on Center Court tonight. Congratulations on your amazing career. You are amazing.”

Both Alcaraz and Swiatek will have undoubtedly learned a lot from veteran Murray in their brief careers so far.

The former is just 21 years old, while the latter is only 23, with the pair remarkably winning a combined total of eight Grand Slam titles.

Their latest came at the French Open, with Swiatek having taken her total prize money in 2024 to $6.68million (£5.23million) following the win.

Both are now firmly focused on Wimbledon, and are safely into round three, with neither having dropped a set so far.

They certainly weren’t the only ones to pay tribute to Murray after his men’s doubles match, with Novak Djokovic delighting tennis fans when he embraced the Scot courtside.
