Andy Murray was unsurprisingly given the warmest of welcomes on centre court for his first round doubles match at Wimbledon.

The two-time singles champion is likely making his very last appearance at SW19, with Murray expected to retire later this year.

His fellow professional Novak Djokovic has, however, tipped the Scot to potentially give Wimbledon another go next year.

The Scot was forced to withdraw from the singles event this time around due to injury, disappointing many tennis fans.

He did, however, pass a late fitness test in order to play doubles alongside his brother Jamie, but their venture was short.

The Scottish pairing was handed a tough task in the opening round, meeting Australian duo John Peers and Rinky Hijikata, who won 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Much of the attention was unsurprisingly focused on Andy, but his rival Djokovic was spotted courtside, with the Serbian embracing the Scot after the loss.

A second user wrote: “It was a lovely, meaningful gesture on his part. And true to his character, as always.”

A third said: “I’m starting to like this version of Novak. The defining moment for me will be what he does when Rafa calls it a day.”

Novak Djokovic watches Andy Murray after beating Jacob Fearnley

Djokovic could have certainly gone home to relax following his lengthy battle with Murray’s fellow Briton Jacob Fearnley.

The pair played out an entertaining four-set clash earlier in the day, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion eventually winning 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

It was a very admirable display from the British number 13, who will have learned a lot from the experience.

Not only did Fearnley play on centre court, but more importantly the 22-year-old went face to face with one of the greatest tennis players and indeed athletes of all time.

Djokovic stayed behind to watch Murray and pay tribute to the Scot, but the Serbian will be firmly focused on progressing at Wimbledon.

Currently chasing a record-equalling eighth title at SW19, the world number two now meets Alexei Popyrin in round three.
