Andy Murray has enjoyed a stunning career, one that has sadly been heavily disrupted by injuries in recent times.
The latest issue involving his back required treatment, with the Scot having done all he could to play Wimbledon one last time.
The 37-year-old is set to retire from the sport later this year, having won two of his three Grand Slam titles at the London tournament.
They arrived in 2013 and 2016 following his 2012 US Open success, with Murray also winning Olympic gold on the Wimbledon grass.
The veteran was scheduled for one last run at the singles in London this time around, having been drawn to face Tomas Machac in round one.

Tennis fans react as Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon
But the match has now been cancelled after it was confirmed that Murray has withdrawn from the singles competition.
The Scot will, however, still attempt to play in the doubles tournament as planned alongside his brother Jamie.
His singles decision has left tennis fans completely gutted, with one X user writing: “Gutted with this. Such a shame.”
A second user wrote: “Gutted to hear this but glad he is prioritising his health. He has nothing left to prove – when he hangs up his racquet, he will do so as a legend.”
A third commented: “So sad for this, though he knows his body, and best not to push when not ready… Hope Andy can have a great experience playing doubles with Jamie. And be right for the Olympics…”
A fourth said: “Not what he would have wanted. End of a wonderful tennis career. So sad for him.”
Another fan wrote: “Very sad, but it was amazing that he managed a come-back after hip surgery. What a brilliant career.”
Other users commented: “Shame he’s missed out but he’s a lot of healthy life ahead and great memories to reflect on,” and “Gutted for him, but it’s probably for the best.”
Andy Murray set for Wimbledon doubles with Jamie Murray
Murray will, of course, be absolutely devastated at missing out on an emotional Wimbledon singles farewell.
His fellow professionals will undoubtedly be sending him their best wishes following the announcement, with Emma Raducanu wanting the Scot to continue going for as long as possible.
There could still be a fitting farewell in the doubles, but whether or not Murray can pass that fitness test remains to be seen.
His impending partnership with his brother has delighted their mother Judy, with the duo set to take on Australian pair John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in round one on Wednesday.
Tennis fans will be desperate for the Scottish pairing to take to the court for that game, with a win simply an added bonus at this stage.
