Holger Rune has been unable to move on from his Indian Wells final loss, after suffering a defeat to Reilly Opelka in his opening match at the Miami Open.
Rune was beaten by Jack Draper in the Indian Wells final, after achieving his best result at the Californian tournament.
This was the fourth ATP Masters 1000 final of his career, but Rune’s most convincing defeat after being beaten in straight sets by the British number one.
The Dane has had mixed results so far in 2025, with Rune often unpredictable, and this proved to be the case once again at the Miami Open.
Boris Becker responds to Holger Rune after Miami Open defeat
In his first match at the Miami Open this year, Rune was beaten by the often outspoken Reilly Opelka, with the American winning 4-6 6-3 7-6(5).
This is the second consecutive year that Rune has been winless at the Miami tournament, with the 21-year-old releasing a statement on social media after his defeat to Opelka.
“Happy for Opelka today, good guy, sad for me to leave Miami already,” Rune said on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Thanks for amazing support love the energy from the fans here.”
Rune was coached by Boris Becker for under five months, parting ways in February 2024 after the multiple-time major winner admitted he could not commit to travelling the tour as much as required.
Despite no longer being a coaching partnership, Becker often still comments on Rune’s results and this was the case once again after his Miami Open exit.
Giving his former player respect for his statement towards Opelka, Becker just commented, “Fair-play.”

Rune is not the only player to suffer a post-Indian Wells hangover, with Draper also exiting the Miami Open in his first match since the final.
In-fact all four of the ATP semi-finalists at Indian Wells lost their first match at the Miami Open, with Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz also suffering early exits.
This is the first time that this happened at a Masters 1000 event since 2022, when Hubert Hurkacz, Pablo Carreno Busta, Dan Evans and Casper Ruud all suffered the same fate at the Cincinnati Open.
While in the women’s singles draw in Miami, all four Indian Wells semi-finalists, Mirra Andreeva, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, still remain.
Following this disappointing result, Rune will now switch his attention to his favored clay courts, with his next tournament coming at the Monte Carlo Masters where he reached the final in 2023.
