Holger Rune has cycled through multiple coaches during the early stages of his career, yet claims he doesn’t regret any of it.

The Dane shot into the conversation when he toppled five top 10 players in a row to win the 2022 Paris Masters.

Since however, Holger Rune has suffered coaching and injury setbacks, in what has become a slightly agonizing career drop-off.

Admittedly, Rune’s rise to fourth in the world came about as a result of countless others players failing to defend their points.

However, still considered to have a lot of potential, Rune’s seemingly definitive coaching split with Patrick Mouratogolou this year after multiple stints, looks to have offered some new stability.

The 21-year-old has since partnered up with Lars Christensen, a coach and former player he’s known since his early childhood.

Rune has suggested he’s seen improvement already after just several months with his new team.

However, having cycled through multiple coaches including Boris Becker and now Naomi Osaka’s coach Mouratgolou, Rune has spoken out about the ways they have all impacted his game.

“I have learned a lot from each coach,” Rune said. After working with the same coach for 15 years, I think it was important for me to try something different and get inspiration from other coaches to then figure out what was best for my game and my career.

“Now I have tried different approaches and they have all given me inspiration, in the end they either work or they don’t.

“We all strive to become the best tennis players we can be and we know when we are reaching our potential and when we are not. I am much wiser now about what I need and what works for me.”

Holger Rune’s Six Kings Slam performance shows he has a way to go

Born just six days apart, Alcaraz and Rune were at one point similarly tipped to go all the way.

In fact Rune broadly got there faster with his rise to four in the world. However, since his Spanish contemporary has powered to four major titles and doesn’t look like he’ll slow down.

After Jannik Sinner thumped Daniil Medvedev in 68 minutes, Alcaraz put in a similarly blistering performance.

Taking just two minutes longer, Alcaraz dispatched Rune 6-4, 6-2. If Rune is to find his way back to the top, a thrashing on Wednesday might have been a brutal reality check.
