Holger Rune was beaten by Jack Draper after reaching his fourth ATP Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells.

Rune has reacted to his defeat to Draper since, reflecting on his performance after achieving his best result at Indian Wells this year.

Despite making it further than the Spaniard in California, Rune admitted he was inspired by Carlos Alcaraz, who also lost to Draper in the semi-finals.

The Dane struggled with illness prior to Indian Wells this year, but has since showed some encouraging signs with Rune beating Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Ugo Humbert en route to the final.

What Holger Rune did at Indian Wells that surprised Jack Sock and Steve Johnson

Prior to Indian Wells, Rune won only six of his 11 matches to begin the 2025 season and had actually only won one of his last four.

However, the 21-year-old was able to produce some of his best tennis in the Californian desert, that included Rune hitting a potential shot of the tournament.

Despite knowing what the former world number four can produce at his best level, both Jack Sock and Steve Johnson admitted they were surprised by Rune’s run to the final when speaking on the Nothing Major Podcast.

“Holger Rune making the finals is a little surprising I would say,” said Sock. “I feel like he is very up and down with his level at times. His ceiling is very high and I feel like his floor is kind of low at times.”

Johnson replied, “He was four in the world a year and a half ago and now he is kind of an afterthought, which is crazy. Not an afterthought but not somebody you would think would compete for these titles, I guess.”

Rune is the world number 12 in the ATP rankings after Indian Wells, and is currently seventh in the race to the year-end ATP Finals.

After losing the Indian Wells final, Rune’s wait for another ATP title continues after nearly two years without one.

Holger Rune’s ATP Final Record

Rune reached his first five ATP finals at just 19-years-old in 2022, winning three of those finals.

The most notable of them came at the Paris Masters, where Rune beat Novak Djokovic, who was the defending champion at the time.

However, since that final Rune has only won one title at the Bavarian Open in Munich, losing his four other finals.

Three of those four finals have been at Masters 1000 level, with the Indian Wells final his first in over a year.
