The US Open has now concluded, with Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz emerging victorious in New York.

Alcaraz has been congratulated by Jannik Sinner, with the former having beaten the latter 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s singles final.

That arrived shortly after the women’s singles final, in which WTA number one Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova.

Sabalenka is now a four-time Grand Slam champion, with the Belarusian overcoming American Anisimova 6-3, 7-6(7-3).

Both US Open finals were played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, and have completed the 2025 Grand Slam seasons.

Three top players who badly disappointed at the 2025 US Open

But while the champions had tournaments to remember, there were a handful of players who will be really disappointed with their efforts.

Three top players in particular failed to live up to expectations at the hard-court Grand Slam, much to their disappointment.

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev continued his hugely disappointing Grand Slam season with a third successive first round defeat.

Just as he did at Wimbledon, Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi condemned the Russian to a shock early exit at Flushing Meadows.

Moreover, the former ATP number one received a $42,500 fine from the United States Tennis Association for an outburst during the match, adding to his frustrations.

It is, however, certainly worth remembering that he won the US Open in 2021, with that feat impressively making him the most recent Grand Slam champion outside of Alcaraz, Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Coco Gauff

Like Medvedev, Coco Gauff is a former US Open champion, having triumphed on home soil in stunning fashion in 2023.

That success, along with her recent French Open title and indeed her support in New York, made her a strong candidate to go all the way.

But she fell to Naomi Osaka in the round of 16, with Gauff rapidly leaving the court following her disappointing straight set defeat.

Gauff was upbeat despite her US Open exit, showing all of her maturity and class after having a huge weight on her shoulders.

Madison Keys

Madison Keys, like Gauff, entered the US Open as a current Grand Slam champion, winning the 2025 Australian Open title.

She also received huge support from the American crowd, but that couldn’t prevent a shock exit in just the first round of the competition.

She fell early to Renata Zarazua, and will be extremely disappointed to have let down her home fans, particularly given her superb start to the Grand Slam season.

Keys can, however, still be very proud of her efforts from Melbourne, which culminated in a superb final win over Sabalenka.
