Daniil Medvedev took centre stage despite losing his US Open first round match against Benjamin Bonzi.

Medvedev needed a good US Open, but the 20-time ATP champion suffered a disastrous loss to Bonzi in dramatic circumstances.

Russian star Medvedev is expecting to receive a fine following his behaviour during the match, in which he confronted the chair umpire and smashed his racket.

He approached Greg Allensworth after he awarded Bonzi another first serve at match point following a premature entrance onto the court by a photographer.

The Frenchman failed to convert his chance after a delay of more than six minutes, but held his nerve to win their US Open tie 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5-7), 0-6, 6-4.

Andy Roddick says if he liked seeing Daniil Medvedev ‘lose it’ at the US Open

Medvedev has now lost all three of his clashes with Bonzi, including in the first round of Wimbledon this year.

Reacting to their latest encounter, Andy Roddick said on his Served podcast: “Medvedev has beaten everyone on earth, for a long time, except Bonzi. Can’t beat Bonzi.

“Medvedev lost it in the fifth. I like it when people lose it. I generally tend not to change the channel when people lose it.

“But he lost in five, and he’s got some searching to do in a place that he hasn’t been in, you know, seven or eight years. [Reilly] Opelka called that umpire an idiot a couple of weeks ago and got fined in Canada.”

Andy Roddick admits Daniil Medvedev surprise after early US Open exit

Medvedev certainly wasn’t in the best form entering the US Open, having lost his first match of the Cincinnati Open.

He fell to Adam Walton earlier this month, with tennis fans telling Medvedev to take a break from the sport after that shock loss.

Choosing to ignore those calls, Medvedev returned to training after the Cincinnati Open before another attempt at US Open success.

Adding further thoughts on the Russian following his exit, Roddick said: “I thought we were going to see the Medi magic.

“I thought he was going to force the comeback, 6-0 in the fourth, but wasn’t to be, but still got to yell at someone.”

Having once made it all the way to number one in the world rankings, the 29-year-old has slipped to 13th.

And his win-loss record for the season now stands at 26-18, with his most recent ATP title arriving back in 2023.
