Frances Tiafoe could be about to end his title drought at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
Tiafoe had a disappointing season by his standards in 2025, leading to him dropping outside the top 30 for the first time in four years.
Despite the struggles he has faced over the past year, Tiafoe still has three big goals for his career.
Two of those goals relate to climbing the ATP rankings, and Tiafoe has a big opportunity to do just that as well as claim his first title since 2023 in Acapulco.

Frances Tiafoe has a huge opportunity at the Mexican Open
Tiafoe is the eighth seed at the prestigious ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco this year, but he now has to be one of the big favorites for the title.
Following his dramatic second round win over his compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic, which included Tiafoe saving two match points, he is now one of only three seeds remaining.
Do you think Frances Tiafoe is good enough to win a Grand Slam if he fully commits?
All four of the top seeds have already been knocked out, which started when Alex de Minaur suffered a shock defeat to Patrick Kypson in the first round.
This has been followed by the exits of Casper Ruud, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and top seed Alexander Zverev.
As a result, Tiafoe, Flavio Cobolli and Valentin Vacherot are the only remaining seeds in Acapulco and will be sensing their opportunity.
Tiafoe has won three ATP titles in his career, one on every surface, but he has not lifted a singles trophy since his victory on the grass of Stuttgart in 2023.
| ATP Tournament Frances Tiafoe won | Final Result |
| Delray Beach Open 2018 | Tiafoe beat Peter Gojowczyk, 6-1 6-4 |
| U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships (Houston) 2023 | Tiafoe beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry, 7-6(1) 7-6(6) |
| Stuttgart Open 2023 | Tiafoe beat Jan-Lennard Struff, 4-6 7-6(1) 7-6(8) |
The biggest threat to Frances Tiafoe in Acapulco is clear
Although there are seven other players remaining in the tournament, there is one player that is clearly the biggest threat to Tiafoe.
Tiafoe has a winning head-to-head against six of the seven players he is competing against for the Mexican Open title, but there is one he has never faced.
Which American man has the best chance of winning a Grand Slam in 2026?
That person is Shanghai Masters champion Vacherot, who has enjoyed a dramatic rise up the rankings since his shock victory last year.
Vacherot relished in the uncomfortable conditions in Shanghai last year while many others were struggling, and he appears to be doing the same in Acapulco.
| Quarterfinalists as the 2026 Mexican Open | Head-to-Head vs Frances Tiafoe |
| Mattia Bellucci | 1-0 Tiafoe |
| Valentin Vacherot | 0-0 |
| Brandon Nakashima | 5-1 Tiafoe |
| Miomir Kecmanovic | 5-0 Tiafoe |
| Terence Atmane | 1-0 Tiafoe |
| Flavio Cobolli | 2-0 Tiafoe |

Tiafoe could play Vacherot in the semifinals in Acapulco, but first he will need to focus on his quarterfinal opponent Mattia Bellucci.
This will be a second meeting between the two players, with Tiafoe beating Bellucci when they played at the 2024 French Open.
