Alex de Minaur could actually benefit from his shock first round defeat at the Mexican Open.

De Minaur was beaten by Patrick Kypson, who is the current world number 103, in Acapulco.

This was a hugely surprising result for De Minaur, who is usually so consistent against lower-ranked players.

While losing to a player ranked outside the top 100 does not appear positive on the surface, it could actually benefit De Minaur for his next tournament.

Alex de Minaur now has more time to prepare for Indian Wells

De Minaur decided to play at the Mexican Open, where he is a two-time former champion, just a week before Indian Wells.

The Australian was the second seed at the ATP 500 tournament, and therefore was forecasted to reach the final of the tournament, which would have taken place just six days before his potential first match at Indian Wells.

While six days may seem like a lot, the conditions in Acapulco are unique to any other on the ATP Tour, particularly with the heat and high humidity.

This means that it takes longer for players to adapt to the more windy conditions at Indian Wells, which De Minaur now has an opportunity to do.

De Minaur lost his first round match on Monday in Acapulco, and will therefore have at least 11 days ahead of his opening match at Indian Wells.

This gives De Minaur a much greater preparation time for Indian Wells, which is one of the biggest tournaments on the tennis calendar outside the four Grand Slams.

What is Alex de Minaur’s best previous result at Indian Wells?

De Minaur will be especially hoping that his extra recovery time will help boost his result at Indian Wells given his previous results at the tournament.

In his seven previous appearances at Indian Wells, De Minaur has only won nine of his 16 matches and has never surpassed the fourth round of the tournament.

This includes four defeats at the last-16 stage of the tournament, including De Minaur’s defeat to Francisco Cerundolo last year.

It is unclear as to what the reason for this is, but this could be partly down to De Minaur’s many runs to the latter stages of the Mexican Open in previous years.

De Minaur will be boosted at Indian Wells this year in another way, as it is the first time he will be a top eight seed at the tournament.

This means that his draw should be more generous to De Minaur, as he will avoid a top eight opponent until at least the quarterfinals.

De Minaur will look to return to form at Indian Wells next week, with the main draw getting underway on Wednesday, March 4.
