Felix Auger-Aliassime has reacted in the best way possible to the disappointment he suffered at the Australian Open.

Auger-Aliassime enjoyed a resurgent 2025 season, which included him reaching the US Open semifinals and achieving a career-high ranking of world number five.

As a result, Auger-Aliassime had high expectations on his shoulders for 2026, but they were dented at the first major of the year.

At the Australian Open, Auger-Aliassime exited in the first round after retiring from his first round match due to cramp.

There was a lot of concern surrounding Auger-Aliassime after this, but he has reacted in the best way possible.

Felix Auger-Aliassime has put Australian Open disappointment firmly behind him

Following his Australian Open disappointment, Auger-Aliassime took a late wildcard into the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier, where he was the defending champion.

This is hugely commendable in itself, as Auger-Aliassime may have had to swallow some pride as a top 10 player to compete in the lowest calibre of tournaments on the ATP Tour.

Auger-Aliassime would go on to win the title in Montpellier for a second consecutive year after beating Adrian Mannarino in the final.

This shows that the Canadian has put this defeat firmly behind him, with Auger-Aliassime showing real character to do this.

It was also an incredibly mature decision from Auger-Aliassime to make, returning to a tournament he has won before that is on his preferred indoor hard courts.

Auger-Aliassime has also been rewarded via his ranking, and he will now have momentum behind him, rather than the disappointment looming from the Australian Open.

Who will win the 2026 Rotterdam Open?

Felix Auger-Aliassime needs to change something if he is to reach his true potential

While there is a lot of positivity now surrounding Auger-Aliassime again, there are still concerns about whether he will be able to reach his true potential.

Auger-Aliassime is seen as a potential challenger to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but something needs to change if that is going to be the case.

In his head-to-head against the two dominant players on the ATP Tour right now, Auger-Aliassime has won five matches, which is more than most.

Auger-Aliassime actually won his first five matches against Alcaraz and Sinner, but it is his recent record that strikes more concern.

Since taking the lead in his head-to-head against Alcaraz and Sinner, Auger-Aliassime has lost his last nine matches against them.

This should be hugely concerning for Auger-Aliassime, who will want to be challenging for Grand Slam titles going forward.

Who will join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a new ‘big three’?

Another issue for Auger-Aliassime could be his dominance indoors, which could appear to be a strange concern.

While Auger-Aliassime has enjoyed a lot of success at indoor events, winning eight of his nine ATP titles under a roof, most of the biggest tournaments are mainly played outdoors.

Auger-Aliassime will need to try and close the gap between his level indoors and outdoors if he is to reach his true potential.

However, that will not be the case this week, as Auger-Aliassime looks to win another indoor title at the Rotterdam Open.

The next outdoor tournament Auger-Aliassime will play will be at the Qatar Open, where he could also get the opportunity to test his level against Alcaraz and Sinner as they are the top two seeds.
