Daniil Medvedev has announced himself as a real threat on the ATP Tour again after winning his first title in 29 months.

Medvedev won the Almaty Open after beating Corentin Moutet in the final, claiming his first title since the 2023 Italian Open.

Not only is this the former US Open champion’s first title since May 2023, but it is also the first since Medvedev hired his new coach Thomas Johansson.

After winning his first title in over two years, Medvedev should now have his sights set on another big goal.

Medvedev has been world number one before, but he has struggled to show anywhere near that sort of form in 2025.

This has included Medvedev winning only one Grand Slam match all year, causing him to fall to his lowest ranking in seven years.

However, since Medvedev split with his long-term coach after the US Open, there have been some positive signs and winning the Almaty Open is evidence of that.

As a result, Medvedev has continued to make his way back up the rankings and he will be world number 14 in the latest update of the ATP rankings.

Medvedev should now be eyeing up a return to the top 10, with just 350 ranking points separating him from that position.

That position is currently held by Holger Rune, who will be out for an indefinite period after suffering a serious injury in Stockholm.

Medvedev also has the advantage over the players around him in this section of the rankings, as only Felix Auger-Aliassime has fewer points to defend than him until 2026.

How many more tournaments is Daniil Medvedev playing in 2025?

Although this appears to be a realistic goal for Medvedev in 2025, he only has two tournaments to bridge this gap over the top 10.

Medvedev has entered the Vienna Open and the Paris Masters, with only 10 points to defend across those two tournaments.

However, as he will not qualify for the ATP Finals this year, Medvedev is guaranteed to lose 200 ranking points from 2024.

Medvedev will look to keep the winning feeling going at the Vienna Open, the tournament which he won in 2022.

The sixth seed will play Portuguese player Nuno Borges in the first round, a player who Medvedev has beaten in all three of their previous meetings.
