Tommy Paul says him and Jannik Sinner were both suffering with the same problem in the first set of their US Open match

Tommy Paul has crashed out of the US Open after a straight-set defeat to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

Sinner praised Paul ahead of the match, which the Italian won 7-6(7-3), 7-6(7-5), 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Paul was backed to win the US Open, but his impressive tournament was finally brought to an end by the world number one.

The American can certainly hold his head high after his run at the US Open, with Sinner now the favourite to go on and lift the trophy.

Paul pushed the Italian hard at various stages of the match, with Sinner needing all of his ability and experience to battle to victory.

Tommy Paul admits nerves in US Open clash vs Jannik Sinner

Despite his US Open exit, Paul seemingly enjoyed the meeting with Sinner, from the actual tennis to the venue that hosted the match.

Discussing the game in his US Open fourth round press conference, Paul said: “That’s where you want to be. When I saw the match up I thought there was a good chance it was going to be a night match and that’s what I was hoping for.

“It’s definitely different from any other match and setting. It’s electric. To walk out I was pretty nervous, obviously. It took me a while to start settling in and having fun.

“The first set, him and me, it felt like we were battling nerves a bit and trying to settle in and it didn’t happen until the beginning of the second. I started enjoying the moment. It’s a pretty cool place to play tennis.”

American victor on the cards at the US Open

American men’s tennis is in a superb place, with Paul among the US stars to have shone brightly at the tournament.

Ben Shelton and Brandon Nakashima also impressed, while Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz remain in the competition.

It certainly is a special event, with Paul among the players to have enjoyed participating at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Carlos Alcaraz loves playing in New York, with Emma Navarro also enjoying Arthur Ashe Stadium, having beaten Coco Gauff there in the fourth round.

The US Open crowd have been in fine form throughout the tournament, but their excitement could reach new levels if an American went on to lift the trophy.

Tiafoe and Fritz have the opportunity to do that in the men’s singles, while Navarro and Jessica Pegula remain in the women’s singles event.
