The Australian Open has not been a hit with some people this year.

There have been a limited number of competitive matches in Melbourne, which were highlighted when Lorenzo Musetti retired against Novak Djokovic after leading by two sets.

This continued into women’s singles semifinals, as Aryna Sabalenka comfortably beat Elina Svitolina, while Elena Rybakina held off Jessica Pegula to reach the final in straight sets.

This has left some feeling like the Australian Open is missing something, and two former players have debated whether it is the most boring Grand Slam ever.

Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson call the Australian Open ‘boring’

The men’s and women’s quarterfinal matches both saw only one match that was not completed in either straight sets or retirement.

When reviewing the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on the latest episode of the Nothing Major Podcast, former American ATP players Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson debated whether this is the most boring Grand Slam tournament of all time.

Former Wimbledon semifinalist Querrey asked the question, and Johnson struggled to argue against it.

Querrey: “Has this been the most boring Grand Slam ever? At least since I can remember.”

Johnson: “Yeah. There has not been one memorable match. There has not been one match that has been out of character for the tournament.”

Querrey: “The [Jannik] Sinner drama with [Eliot] Spizzirri and other than that not a single exciting match.”

When was the last five set match on Rod Laver Arena?

The Rod Laver Arena is the centre court at the Australian Open, and is supposed to feature the most standout matches and players.

However, what has been noticeable about the Rod Laver Arena this year has been the number of one-sided matches.

This is highlighted by the statistic that shows that there has not been a five set match on that court since the first round last year.

Daniil Medvedev beat Kasidit Samrej in the first round of the Australian Open in 2025, and there has not been a five set match on Rod Laver Arena since then.

Who is going to win the men’s Australian Open title?

There has actually been only one singles match which has gone to a deciding set at the Australian Open this year, which came when Naomi Osaka beat Antonia Ruzic in the first round.

Tennis fans will likely be hoping that this changes, with the men’s semifinals and final to come, as well as Sabalenka taking on Rybakina in a rematch of the thrilling 2023 Australian Open final.
