The 2026 Australian Open semi-finals are set, and on both the men’s and women’s sides, we are sure to be in for a treat.
At least, that’s what many would expect.
If how this tournament has gone thus far is anything to go by though, nothing is guaranteed.
After all, despite being treated to plenty of good matches on paper, we are yet to see any kind of drama or intrigue, particularly on Rod Laver Arena.
The fact of the matter is that the 2026 Australian Open has been boring.
The 2026 Australian Open has been boring
The crucial ingredient that consistently captures tennis fans’ attention is drama. Whether it be on or off the court, they love to see their favourite players embroiled in moments of great tension. It is what drives all elite sports.
Sadly, that has been frighteningly barren on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Who is going to win the women’s Australian Open title?
The fact that so many seeds have got through is not the sole cause of this though, as that can often be a mark of quality.
However, they have barely been tested by the unlikely hopefuls or the unseeded threats, with Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, Jessica Pegula, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner all having made the semi-finals without breaking a sweat.
Many tipped Coco Gauff’s quarter-final against Svitolina to be a thriller, but it was anything but.

Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien shared some great battles in 2025, but the American won with alarming ease.
Matches that would normally produce fireworks simply have not, and there’s a statistic that further proves just how boring this event has been.
Startling statistic proves how boring the 2026 Australian Open has been
When was the last five-set match played on Rod Laver Arena? If you’re trying to think of one that happened this year, you’ll be waiting a while. It is yet to occur.
In fact, the last time any match went the full five sets on the Australian Open’s biggest stadium was Medvedev’s first-round win over Kasidit Samrej back in 2025.
Who is going to win the men’s Australian Open title?
That effectively proves that we have had no jeopardy on the men’s side, and injuries to players like Lorenzo Musetti, Jakub Mensik, Naomi Osaka and Felix Auger-Aliassime have further dampened excitement throughout the event too.
Arguably, the only storyline of note has been Stan Wawrinka’s run to the third round.
Hopefully, with so much star quality in the semi-finals, that will change in the final few days of the first Grand Slam of the year.
