History has been made on the ATP and WTA Tours following the conclusion of the French Open.

The 2024 edition of the clay court Grand Slam did not disappoint as the gloomy skies and numerous rain delays soon made way for the sunshine which served as a perfect backdrop to the pulsating tennis action.

The event ended with a new champion on the men’s side while a familiar face triumphed in Paris once again in the women’s event.

Following some other results at the French Open, it has become clearer that the new era has well and truly begun.

What happened with the ATP and WTA rankings after the French Open?

For the fourth time in five years, Iga Swiatek lifted the French Open trophy by dispatching Jasmine Paolini for the loss of just three games.

This came after the World number one was one point away from being knocked out by Naomi Osaka in the second round.

24 hours after her success, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets to win Roland Garros for the first time in his career.

The victory pushed the Spaniard back to number two in the world rankings, behind the new top ranked men’s player Jannik Sinner, who reached the last four in Paris. Coco Gauff reached a career high ranking number two after reaching the semi-finals where she lost to Swiatek.

Therefore, with all four players occupying the top two spots in their respective rankings, this is the first time this has occurred with each player being born in the 2000s.

What are Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s results in 2024?

Sinner enjoyed his best ever start to a season by winning 16 matches in a row, which included his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. He also won the Rotterdam and Miami titles, and had his best run at Roland Garros so far.

Alcaraz did not win his first title of the season until Indian Wells, and in the process ended Sinner’s unbeaten start to the year. After missing most of the clay court season due to injury, he ended it by winning the third major of his career.

On the women’s side, Swiatek suffered a shock early exit at the Australian Open but rebounded by winning the Qatar and Indian Wells titles. She then became the first woman since Serena Williams to claim the Madrid, Rome and French Open titles in the same season.

Gauff has managed just to win just one title in 2024 so far, and that came in her first tournament of the year. She defended the ASB Classic before achieving her best result at the Australian Open with a run to the semi-finals.

Last four appearances at Indian Wells, Rome and the French Open followed and the American’s consistency has earned her a career high ranking of World number two.
