Coco Gauff saw her US Open campaign come to an end after suffering a straight sets defeat to Naomi Osaka.
This was the first time that Gauff had played Osaka at the US Open since 2019, and it resulted in the same outcome, despite being six years apart.
Despite being the third seed at the New York major, Gauff won just five games against Osaka, who has now been predicted to win the US Open.
Gauff has been under a lot of pressure at the US Open this year, and tennis fans are now all telling her to do the same thing following her exit from the tournament.
Tennis fans tell Coco Gauff to take a break from tennis after US Open defeat
Gauff’s 6-3 6-2 defeat to Osaka is her heaviest defeat at a hard court major since her last US Open match against the Japanese star six years ago.
This signals the end of Gauff’s Grand Slam season for 2025, and tennis fans now all think she should take some time away from the sport.
One wrote on X (formerly known as X), “I think Coco Gauff needs to take a break from the game. Mentally and emotionally she’s not there. She’s really young still. A lot of tennis left for her. She’ll bounce back.”
Another echoed the same sentiment, backing Gauff to return to form after taking some time away to reset.
“It was a rough tournament for Coco Gauff but I have no doubt she will be back up and running. Maybe she just needs a break here.”
There was a lot of excitement around the match between Osaka and Gauff, but it did not live up to everyone’s hopes.
Another social media user wrote, “Not a contest unfortunately. V(ery) strong performance from Osaka but Gauff was all over the place. Hopefully she can take a break now and work on things away from the spotlight.”
It has not been an entirely poor Grand Slam season for Gauff, who won Roland Garros back in May.
However, since then Gauff has lost in the first round of Wimbledon, before her fourth round defeat at the US Open.
This has left tennis fans with many questions, including about the performance of Gauff’s new serving coach Gavin MacMillan.
One said, “Coco Gauff needs some time off… I’m not sure what happened after Roland Garros but she’s looked really bad since then.”
Another added, “Coco been underwhelming since the French. Time to take a break and regroup. Cut out all the nonsense distractions and also fire the ‘biomechanics’ guy.”
Gauff will now prepare for the Asian swing, with it being suggested that her recent woes have been more mental than errors within her game.
“All the best Gauff. Take some time to rest and get ready for the Asian swing. You looked so flat today and tennis is 90% mental. Wishing you the best.”
When is Coco Gauff’s next scheduled WTA tournament?
Gauff will now have that requested time away from the match court, with nearly three weeks until her next scheduled tournament.
That tournament is the China Open, which begins on Wednesday, September 24, but she could face even more pressure at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing.
Last year, Gauff won the China Open for the first time and will have 1000 ranking points to defend when she returns to the capital.
Gauff is then expected to play at the other Chinese WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, where she also has semifinal points to defend.
These tournaments could be important for Gauff, as she looks to secure her qualification for the year-end WTA Finals event in Riyadh, where she is also the defending champion.
