Coco Gauff marched on at Flushing Meadows when she defeated Magdalena Frech in convincing fashion to book her place in the fourth round of the US Open.

Gauff beat Frech in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, in what marked her most comfortable victory of the tournament so far.

The American was forced to a third set in the first round by Ajla Tomljanovic, and narrowly escaped by clinching the decider by seven games to five.

In round two, Gauff was brought to tears between games against Donna Vekic after getting broken at 4-4 in the first set.

She went on to beat Vekic and later revealed that she was suffering a panic attack during the changeover.

Coco Gauff explains her panic attack against Donna Vekic

Speaking to Sky Sports, Gauff said of the situation: “I mean it was I think a panic attack. I’ve had them before off court, but it was the first time that happened to me on the court.

“So, I think for me, I was just trying to calm myself down and just breathe in the moment. And that was kind of why I went to the bathroom after that first set to reset.

“It was one of those moments that I just was like, I want to get off the court right now and and it be over with.

“But I think for me, I needed that to happen because I think the support that I got afterwards, I just realised how much people love me and how much I should love myself too in those moments.

“So, I think it was a learning experience and I’ll remember it for the rest of my career, and just know that there’s a lot more to be grateful for than losing on a court.”

In the fourth round, Gauff will face off against the two-time US Open champion, Naomi Osaka, who she has played five times on tour before.

Their first meeting came in New York six years ago, when Osaka, defending her title, dominated her, 6-3, 6-0, to advance past the third round.

Since then, they have not met at a Grand Slam, but have come up against one another in Cincinnati, where Osaka won, as well as San Jose and Beijing, where the US star emerged victorious.
