Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon dreams were crushed in the first round, as she suffered a shock defeat.

The American star had hoped to win Wimbledon for the first time in 2025, but came up short in the first round.

Stepping foot onto court one as a heavy favorite, Gauff was stunned by Dayana Yastremska in straight sets, 6-7, 1-6.

The Ukrainian was just too good for Gauff, as she condemned the world number two to her earliest Grand Slam exit in two years.

Giving her immediate reaction to Gauff’s first-round defeat, former world number one Tracy Austin claimed the 21-year-old never looked ‘comfortable’ on the grass.

Commentating for the BBC, Austin was shocked after the match as she shared her thoughts on Yastremska’s win.

“What a performance from Dayana Yastremska. The performance of her life,” she said.

“She came out with such big weapons, so much power, and she was able to contain it. Just an hour and 18 minutes. It went by pretty quickly. She put [Coco] Gauff on her heels.”

Yastremska was solid throughout as Gauff’s serve let her down, making nine double faults in total.

Commenting on Gauff’s performance, Austin was keen to praise the world number two for how she acted after the match.

“Gauff never really felt comfortable on the grass. She did not have a lot of lead-up matches coming into Wimbledon,” she said.

“Coco was so gracious at the handshake.”

The American played just the one grass warm-up match ahead of Wimbledon, in Berlin, when Gauff lost to Wang Xinyu in straight sets.

Finishing up her grass-court season with a 0-2 record, failing to win a single set, Gauff will want to move on as quickly as possible, as she turns her attention to hard courts.

When will Coco Gauff return after first-round Wimbledon defeat?

In 2024, Gauff made her return post-Wimbledon at the Canadian Open, where she lost in the second round to Diana Shnaider.

She’s likely to do the same in 2025, as she looks to make her presence felt on a surface she has enjoyed success on over the years.

Coco Gauff’s hard-court finals

Gauff has won all eight finals she’s played on hard courts, as she tends to make the most of her opportunities on the surface.

Three times a champion on North American hard-courts, Gauff will no doubt be in contention to add a fourth to her collection in a few months’ time.

The 2025 Canadian Open is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 26.
