Boris Becker sends message to Holger Rune after he knocks Daniil Medvedev out of Indian Wells and reaches the final

Holger Rune has reached the Indian Wells final for the first time in his career after beating Daniil Medvedev.

Rune had struggled with illness coming into the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year, withdrawing from matches in both Rio de Janeiro and Acapuclo.

However, the Dane appears to have more than overcome this, with Rune hitting the potential shot of the tournament in his quarter-final match against Tallon Griekspoor.

Medvedev was looking for Indian Wells history this year, but Rune has prevented that from happening after beating his Russian opponent.

Rune was coached by Boris Becker from October 2023, with their collaboration lasting less than five months.

When announcing their split, Becker explained that he was not able to commit to Rune as much as he would need to.

“I would like to inform you that I will step down as the head coach of Holger Rune with immediate effect,” Becker wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) in February 2024.

“We started this partnership with the initial goal to reach the ATP Finals end of last year but moving forward I realised that in order for this to be successful, I would need to be available for Holger much more than I can.

“I wish him only the very best and I’m always going to be his n.1 fan. I truly appreciated this journey together. BB.”

Despite their partnership not going the way that they would have liked, it appears that there is still respect between the pair following Becker’s latest social media post.

After Rune beat Medvedev, 7-5 6-4, to reach the Indian Wells final, Becker sent a message to his former player on social media.

“Happy for @holgerrune2003 winning against @DaniilMedwed and making the final at @BNPPARIBASOPEN!” exclaimed the former world number one.

Becker knows what it takes to lift the Indian Wells title, having won it in back-to-back years in 1987 and 1988.

Holger Rune makes history for Denmark at Indian Wells

Rune, who is now coached by Lars Christensen and Kenneth Carlsen, made history for his country by reaching the Indian Wells final.

After beating Medvedev in straight sets, the 21-year-old became the first player from Denmark to reach the men’s singles final at Indian Wells.

There has been a previous Danish finalist in the Indian Wells women’s singles event, with Caroline Wozniacki reaching three in four years between 2010 and 2013.

Wozniacki won her only Indian Wells title in 2011 after beating Marion Bartoli in the final.

While the Indian Wells final is new experience for Rune, it is the fourth time that he has reached a Masters 1000 final.

Rune beat Novak Djokovic in his first ATP 1000 final at the Paris Masters as a 19-year-old, but has lost both of his finals since.

Jack Draper, who beat Carlos Alcaraz in the other Indian Wells semi-final, with Rune playing the British number one in a bid to win his second Masters 1000 title.

This will be their second ever meeting on the ATP Tour, with Rune beating Draper in Cincinnati last year.
