Andy Murray’s glistening tennis career came to an end after his doubles defeat at the Olympics with Dan Evans against Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.

Fritz and Paul were a class apart for most of the contest, but as ever with Murray – he did not go down without a fight.

Evans and Murray once again saved a match point at 5-2 down in the second set and managed to break, but ultimately they could not escape again.

The British pair have made a habit out of escaping from the depths of despair at the Olympics so far, having saved match points in both of their first two matches.

But it was a step too far for them against the American pair, who are now one of the favourites to take the gold medal.

Murray and Evans were both left in tears at the end, as the defeat brought to a close the Scot’s iconic career in tennis.

Queen’s to rename stadium after Andy Murray

Tributes quickly flooded in on social media after the match but arguably the most meaningful one came from Queen’s Club.

The Cinch Championships have announced that they will be renaming their centre court the Andy Murray Arena from next year.

Murray has a proud record at Queen’s having won the championship on five separate occasions between 2009 and 2016.

Murray also claimed the doubles title in London in 2019, after returning from injury to lift the title with Feliciano Lopez.

What next for Murray?

Murray has suggested that he feels ready to retire now, which is a change in attitude to what he previously had.

The 37-year-old has consistently fought to prolong his time playing, particularly in the latter stages of career when he has suffered badly with injury.

The two time Wimbledon champion has already said that he will stay in tennis though, and Murray has hinted that a coaching role is a possibility in the future.
