Andy Murray explained how his thought process has changed in the last few months regarding his retirement from tennis.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning almost 20 years, but it is almost at an end as Murray will stop playing after the 2024 Olympic Games.
The British player competed in arguably the toughest era of men’s tennis with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
He pushed them more consistently than any other player at that time, and he had his share of success against them at the highest level.
But now aged 37, the injuries have piled up and Murray has decided it is time for him to bid farewell to a sport that has given him so much.
What has changed in Andy Murray as he nears retirement?
Murray previously spoke of not wanting to retire and fighting with the idea that he was not able to perform the way he once did despite working just as hard.
However, the more thought he has given the idea, Murray has found peace with his career coming to an end and told BBC Sport that it is now the right time to say goodbye.
“I didn’t feel that way a few months ago when I thought that this is when I was going to stop,” the former World number one said. “I didn’t want to. Now I want to. I know it is the right time for me.”
He also told Sky Sports: “To be honest, right now I don’t feel like it’s difficult [decision to leave tennis]. A few months ago I did, I was worried about it, I was unsure about it. But right now, I’m ready.
“I’m looking forward to what comes next. Being at home with my children and family. Physically I can’t prepare and compete like I used to, and therefore it’s time for me to finish. I’m good with that, and I didn’t expect to be, to be honest. I’ll be fine.”

Andy Murray’s career as a singles player is over
Murray was unable to play singles at Wimbledon due to having back surgery after Queen’s in June.
It has now been confirmed that he is pulling out of the singles event at the Paris Olympics and will only play doubles alongside Dan Evans.
Ahead of his last chance of claiming an Olympic medal, Murray said: “I am playing with Dan Evans and he’s a very good singles player but his game translates really well to doubles and we have been training well the last few days.
“But it’s not going to be easy either, there’s a lot of top teams out there. But realistically the doubles is going to be the best chance of winning a medal.”
