Holger Rune is desperate to win a Grand Slam but he has a tough task given the quality of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
When the young Danish player burst on the scene, he was tipped to be part of the next ‘Big 3’ with the World number one and reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion.
But the Rune has been unable to show the form he produced in 2024, while Alcaraz and Sinner have excelled and are now multi-time major winners.
Rune is keen to finish the campaign on a positive note and start afresh next season where he aims to get back in the conversation of Grand Slam contenders.
Can Holger Rune win a Grand Slam with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the main threats?
Holger Rune has yet to produce his best tennis at Grand Slam events. He has reached as far as the quarter-finals on three occasions, twice at the French Open and the other at Wimbledon.
But Alcaraz and Sinner already have six Grand Slams between them, four of which they claimed this season.
Rune has plenty of work to do to become a threat to the pair, in addition to Novak Djokovic is still a major contender and other top 10 players such as Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

But Nicolas Mahut, a five-time Grand Slam doubles champion, thinks Rune has what it takes to claim Grand Slam glory, despite Alcaraz and Sinner being further ahead in their development.
“Rune won’t be satisfied until he wins a Grand Slam. I think he’s completely consumed by it. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day he manages to win one,” Mahut told Eurosport France.
“Obviously he’s not as strong as Sinner and Alcaraz, but there will be more room than during the golden generation with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray. There will be opportunities and I think he’ll be one of those players who can seize one.”
When did Holger Rune last win an ATP title?
Since beating Djokovic in an epic final to claim the Paris Masters 1000 title in November 2022, Rune has claimed just one more title.
That came in April 2023 when he successfully defended the Munich Open trophy, but he has not tasted championship glory since.
Rune has been through several coaching changes recently, including short stints with the likes of Patrick Mouratoglou and Boris Becker.
But he is now working with Kenneth Carlsen and the World number 14 is now into the Tokyo Open quarter-finals, where he will play home favourite Kei Nishikori.
