Holger Rune is a polarising figure within the tennis community, widely seen as a hugely talented prospect who just lacks the mental fortitude to take that next step.
Whilst his rivals like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner instead take great strides forward, winning Grand Slam titles and reaching the pinnacle of the sport already, the Danish star has dropped to world number 15, having achieved a career-high of fourth and never surpassing the quarter-finals at a major event.
And yet, despite this inability to progress forwards, he is still quite a well-liked figure, purely due to the entertainment value his mere presence guarantees.
Whether it be explosive meltdowns or hilarious comments, Holger Rune is one-of-a-kind.
He has now taken aim at a former coach and tennis legend.
Holger Rune questions Boris Becker move
This time taking to X, on this particular occasion it feels like Rune was justified in his actions.
After all, from the outside looking in, the manner in which Boris Becker went about trying to undermine his former pupil was strange.
The legendary tennis star coached the 21-year-old for a short period of time across 2023 and 2024 before Rune parted ways with Becker, seeking to shake up his team and provoke some positive change.
Clearly not taking it well, his initial tweet questioned Rune’s relationship with his current coach, Patrick Mouratoglou: ‘Quick question: I see @pmouratoglou in London but NOT with @holgerrune2003 at @Wimbledon …they are still working together?!?’
Rune replied: ‘Super strange you don’t ask me this question directly as we text together about other stuff. The answer to your question is yes we work together. Sharing the tournaments between us as planned’.
Holger Rune needs to build on last year’s Wimbledon
Having rekindled his relationship with Mouratoglou in February of this year, Rune will want to start seeing some kind of tangible process before 2024 is done.
And whilst he failed to impress at Roland Garros, exiting at the hands of eventual finalist Alexander Zverev, Wimbledon marks a real chance for him to finally go deep enough to warrant widespread acclaim.
After all, people do want to see Rune do well, given he is hard to dislike despite his at times petulant behaviour.
If he is to succeed, it will likely be due to a sharper, more focused mindset than anything, as his talent is undeniable.
Becker’s strange tweet will likely not have aided his preparation, but could actually add fuel to the fire and help spur on a successful end to the campaign in an effort to prove his former coach wrong.
