Nick Kyrgios is among those in the tennis world left stunned after Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit from the US Open.
Alcaraz was beaten in straight sets by Botic van de Zandschulp in round two of the US Open, losing 4-6, 5-7, 4-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Van de Zandschulp labelled Alcaraz ‘insane’ before their meeting, but the former produced a stunning display to come out on top.
His dream US Open run now continues against Jack Draper in round three, with the Dutchman having beaten Denis Shapovalov in round one.
Alcaraz certainly wasn’t in form on the hard courts ahead of the event, having suffered a first round exit at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

The Spaniard then lost a set against Australian Li Tu in round one at Flushing Meadows, but did emerge victorious 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
He will now undoubtedly need some time to recover from a shock exit in New York, as will the entire tennis world given Alcaraz’s year so far.

Alcaraz’s exit has blown the competition wide open, with the four-time Grand Slam champion having been one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
He clinched his first major title at the event back in 2022, but must now wait another year to replicate his success.
With the number three seed now out, number one seed Jannik Sinner and number two seed Novak Djokovic will both like their chances of going all the way.
