Nick Kyrgios explains why he withdrew from the US Open this year
Kyrgios last played at the Washington Open, losing in the first round of the doubles tournament alongside Gael Monfils.
The former Wimbledon finalist has been struggling with knee, foot and wrist injuries in recent years, with Kyrgios currently outside the top 650 in the ATP singles rankings.
When speaking to fellow ATP player Alexander Bublik for the First and Red Show, Kyrgios revealed that he did not want to risk worsening his injuries by playing at the US Open.
Despite this, he promised Bublik that he would return to tennis at some point before he officially retires from tennis.
Kyrgios: I’m going to try and comeback for sure. I was planning on playing this US Open, but again I don’t want to force my body to the point where I’m going to get re-injured and then the rehab process, you know what it’s like it’s not fun. So yeah, look I’ll promise you I’ll come back yeah, just give me some time. And I’m 30 now bro, relax like.
Bublik: Already?
Kyrgios: Yeah.
Bublik: Time flies, huh.
Kyrgios: Yeah. I turned pro when I was 17, been around for a long time.
