Daniil Medvedev continued his nightmare Grand Slam season as he suffered a shock first round exit at the US Open.

Medvedev is expecting a fine following his behaviour in his match against Benjamin Bonzi, which he lost 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5-7), 0-6, 6-4.

The Russian was angered when his opponent was awarded another first serve following a premature entrance onto the court by a photographer during their US Open first round clash.

Andy Roddick was surprised by Medvedev, who also smashed his racket several times after the defeat to Frenchman Bonzi.

Former ATP number one Medvedev, who won the US Open in 2021, has now lost in the first round of his last three Grand Slams.

Boris Becker is worried for Medvedev following his meltdown at Louis Armstrong Stadium, with another high-profile figure now offering his take on the Russian.

Sharing a short and sweet verdict on the six-time Grand Slam finalist, Nick Kyrgios wrote on X: “Medvedev is the best.”

Kyrgios withdrew from the US Open, but the Australian is clearly still keeping close tabs on the tournament and Medvedev in particular.

Medvedev has won one of his six Grand Slam finals, while Kyrgios lost his only such final at Wimbledon in 2022.

Controversial figure Kyrgios doesn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with everyone on the ATP Tour, and indeed in the wider tennis world.

But he has managed to repair his relations with the likes of Novak Djokovic, with the duo having played doubles together at this year’s Brisbane International.

The Australian also seemingly has a good relationship with Medvedev, who he has played against five times.

And he boasts a superb record against the experienced Russian, with Kyrgios winning four of their five matches.

Both players now have intriguing immediate futures, and it remains to be seen when they will return to the court.

Medvedev has been told to take a break amid his recent shortcomings, while Kyrgios is clearly not fit enough for a return to action amid his constant injury issues.
