Alexei Popyrin was the latest to produce a shock at the US Open after his third round win over Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic struggled mentally against Popyrin, with the latter emerging victorious at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.

The Australian defeated the Serbian 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, with Popyrin overcoming Djokovic for the first time in four attempts.

World number 28 Popyrin and the 28th US Open seed now takes on 20th seed Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16.

The American is certain to be fatigued ahead of the match, having just overcome compatriot Ben Shelton in a five-set thriller.

The Australian is certainly catching the eye of many on tour, including his compatriot Nick Kyrgios, who wrote on X: “I got a feeling Pop is about to turn into a superstar, next year will be his best year.”

How far can Alexei Popyrin go at the US Open?

Popyrin will be beaming with confidence after knocking out second seed and defending US Open champion Djokovic.

He looked ruthless from the very first set, only showing signs of weakness when the Serbian recovered to win the third set.

But the Australian stayed focused to get the job done, only to unfortunately be drawn against American star Tiafoe in the next round.

The world number 20 will also be full of confidence, with their upcoming clash seemingly too tight to call at this moment in time.

But the victor certainly has a great chance of going far, with four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz also out of the tournament.

The Spaniard fell to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round, with Kyrgios reacting to Alcaraz’s shock exit.
