Nick Kyrgios calls for grand slam rule change after ‘crazy’ US Open quarter-final match

Nick Kyrgios has been heavily involved with the US Open despite missing the Grand Slam due to injury.

Kyrgios loved Ben Shelton’s embrace of Frances Tiafoe at the US Open, with the American pair having met in the third round.

The Australian was also impressed by a compatriot in New York, with Kyrgios tipping Alexei Popyrin to be a superstar after he knocked out Novak Djokovic.

Kyrgios remains sidelined with injury, but he has been tuning into the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, as well as carrying out media duties.

Not everyone is a fan of the controversial Australian, but he has undoubtedly been enjoying his time off the court despite his injury problems.

Kyrgios does, however, have an issue with the current rules in tennis, having watched Aryna Sabalenka beat Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

The second seed needed just 73 minutes to overcome the Olympic gold medal winner 6-1, 6-2, much to the frustration of Kyrgios.

He wrote on X: This match will go for just over an hour. Quarter finals. [Dan] Evans/[Karen] Khachanov went 5 hours and 45 mins. First round.

“Maybe we do best of three for the men up until the quarters? Then best of five? But this is kinda crazy.”

Aryna Sabalenka storms into another US Open semi-final

Sabalenka won’t be paying too much attention to the outside noise, with the Belarusian looking likely to reach another US Open final.

She defeated Qinwen at the same stage of the tournament last year, but went on to lose the final to Coco Gauff.

Belarusian star Sabalenka is now 9-1 in Grand Slam quarter-finals throughout her career, with a semi-final clash with Emma Navarro up next.

The women’s quarter-finals have been one-sided thus far, with Navarro beating Paula Badosa in straight sets.

That hasn’t been the case for the men at this stage of the competition, and indeed for Evans’ first round clash with Khachanov, which became the longest match in US Open history.
