Joao Fonseca should not be happy with what has happened ahead of his first round match at the Miami Open.

Fonseca played Jannik Sinner for the first time at Indian Wells last week, losing in two closely fought tie-break sets.

It was then revealed that he could then play Carlos Alcaraz, who is a potential second round opponent for Fonseca.

Fonseca has never played Alcaraz in an ATP match before, but his chances against the world number one have already been dealt a blow after a change was made to his first round match against Fabian Marozsan.

Joao Fonseca will not have a day’s rest before potential match vs Carlos Alcaraz

Fonseca is seen as a future challenger to Alcaraz and Sinner, so there is a lot of excitement about the potential match at the Miami Open.

Which Grand Slam title would you like to see Joao Fonseca win?

The Brazilian is one of the most supported players on the ATP Tour, and the Miami Open was criticised for their handling of Fonseca fans last year.

As a result, tournament director James Blake confirmed that Fonseca would only be on Stadium Court this year.

However, heavy rainfall at the Miami Open this year, which is forecast to continue, has meant that the Stadium Court is not ready yet.

As a result, only 15 of the 16 first round matches from the top half of the men’s singles draw at the Miami Open are taking place on Wednesday, March 18.

The only match that is not is between Fonseca and Marozsan, and they will now be pushed at least a day back.

This means that the victor of the match between Fonseca and Marozsan will not have a day’s rest ahead of their second round match against Alcaraz, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 20.

Playing Alcaraz is already an uphill task, and this situation has given both players an even greater disadvantage.

Where do you think Joao Fonseca will be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?

Fabian Marozsan may actually be a greater threat to Carlos Alcaraz than Joao Fonseca

While there is a lot of hype around the potential match between Fonseca and Alcaraz, Marozsan may actually be a bigger threat to the world number one.

Marozsan has actually beaten Alcaraz before, which came when he stunned the Spaniard at the 2023 Italian Open.

Alcaraz has won their two most recent meetings, but Marozsan also won his only match against Fonseca on the clay of Rome last year.

Marozsan may have beaten both Alcaraz and Fonseca on clay, but his best two Masters 1000 results have come on hard courts, which includes reaching the Miami Open quarterfinals in 2024.

The first round match between Marozsan and Fonseca is set to take place on Thursday, March 19, but more predicted rainfall could cause even more scheduling chaos at the Miami Open.
