Jannik Sinner has praised Joao Fonseca after emerging victorious from their exciting battle at Indian Wells.

Sinner defeated Fonseca 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-4) in an intriguing round of 16 encounter, their first-ever meeting on the ATP Tour.

Despite his vast experience, it was far from an easy match for former world number one Sinner, who was constantly forced to deal with the sheer aggression from his 19-year-old opponent.

Brazilian teenager Fonseca showed very little fear despite the ominous task of facing Sinner, who eventually triumphed after more than two hours of play on Stadium 1.

The winner has now paid a great compliment to his latest Indian Wells opponent with a classy message on social media.

Sharing images from their match in California, Indian Wells second seed Sinner wrote on Instagram: “Quarters next!

“Really happy with yesterday’s match.

“Congrats to [Joao Fonseca] on playing incredible tennis.

“Great atmosphere out there [Indian Wells].”

It’s both a nice touch from Sinner and a confidence boost for Fonseca, who should be very proud of his efforts against the Italian.

Are Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien the biggest ATP rising stars?

While Sinner should also be proud of his display, he needs to quickly turn his focus to the Indian Wells quarterfinals.

There, he’ll take on American Learner Tien, who is the 25th seed at this year’s ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the desert.

After stunning fellow American Ben Shelton, he saved two match points to knock out Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to set up a blockbuster meeting with Sinner.

Just like Sinner versus Fonseca, Sinner versus Tien represents another chance for fans to see the likely future of tennis.

Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner are the biggest superstars and players to beat in men’s tennis right now, but Fonseca and Tien are arguably among those closest to posing a real threat to their dominance.

Fittingly, all four players are former Next Gen ATP Finals champions, but whether or not the Brazilian and the American can really take their games to another level to reach the heights of Sinner and Alcaraz remains to be seen.

One thing that is certain is their current rising star status, although fellow youngsters Jakub Mensik and Arthur Fils are also on very exciting trajectories right now.
