Holger Rune looks set to continue his absence from the ATP Tour for some time after recently undergoing Achilles surgery.

Rune sustained the Achilles injury while playing in Sweden in October, with the ATP star undergoing surgery shortly after.

The issue ended his 2025 season early, although world number 15 Rune has wasted very little time in getting back onto the court.

Rune says he is making good progress on his rehabilitation, but not everyone is feeling so positive about the Dane.

Why Jessica Pegula was ‘scared’ after seeing footage of Holger Rune training

Tennis fans shared concerns for Rune after seeing footage of his training regime, with his fellow player Jessica Pegula now echoing those feelings.

She said on The Player’s Box Podcast: “I was watching him, I’m just like don’t hurt something else. That’s what I felt like. I was like, oh my gosh, it’s a little soon. Obviously I’m not a doctor or whatever, but maybe just chill?”

Doubles icon Desirae Krawczyk then commented: “Hopefully try not to compensate. Because you could compensate on one leg or your arm or something. So you hope that that won’t happen as well when he’s trying to be in rehab.

“But I’m sure he… I mean maybe it’s on him, but he wants to be out there practicing, but I think us tennis players, I can speak for myself, I need to know when to not over push and just be like, hey, it’s okay, you need to just hit for 30 minutes, hit for 30 minutes, even though I can’t hit more or something like that. But yeah, I’m sure he’s got a good team around him.”

Pegula continued: “That’s kind of what scares me when I saw the videos, I’m just like, ohh,” with her fellow WTA star Madison Keys adding: “I think the other thing, when you’re trying to come back from a major injury, surgery, all of that, is that you can only do so much tennis stuff that it’s like, okay, how many weeks can you sit in a chair and swing a racket before you lose your mind and you want to break all of your rackets?”

Is Holger Rune going too quickly with his recovery?

It was a nightmare injury for Rune, who fortunately can still have a long career ahead given that he is only 22 years old.

He has already enjoyed superb success on the ATP Tour, having won five titles and climbed as high as fourth in the world rankings.

However, concern for his future is understandable after the intense practices that he has been undergoing so soon after such a major injury.

He’s clearly desperate to recover as quickly as possible, but there’s a very fine line between stepping up his training and going over the edge.
