Holger Rune is now a month into his recovery after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in October.

Rune picked up the injury during his semifinal match with Ugo Humbert at the Stockholm Open in October and underwent surgery soon after.

The Dane’s setback sparked criticism at the ATP Tour’s packed schedule and heavy workload, with Britain’s Jack Draper calling for changes to be made to the calendar to protect player health.

In recent weeks, Rune has been uploading updates during the recovery process on social media.

Now, however, a video has emerged of the 22-year-old ATP star that has left tennis fans slightly concerned.

Fans react to new video of Holger Rune training on one leg

On his Instagram story, Rune uploaded a clip of himself hitting balls on one leg at the Monte Carlo Country Club.

Fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, were skeptical about the drill he was doing, including one user who simply said: “This is not worth it.”

Is Holger Rune going too quickly with his recovery?

Another fan asked: “Why is his team allowing this? There’s so much else he could be working on, like reviewing his tactics and seeing where he can counter the type of player he struggles against. Going on court in his condition is asking for trouble.”

One user said: “He tore his Achilles a month ago, why is he on the court?

This fan explained: “The lad is chomping at the bit to get out there as fast as he can. He’s hungrier than a boy who hasn’t had any food in a week. Let’s hope he doesn’t rush his comeback and then has to deal with more complications later. This looks a bit risky, but who knows. Maybe he can pull it off.”

Daria Saville, a WTA star who also suffered an Achilles injury, took to X to say: “As someone who’s been through two ACL reconstructions and an Achilles surgery, if I’d pushed this hard this early in rehab (return to play), I would’ve gone insane. I do think Holger is built differently, though.”

Holger Rune’s 2025 season statistics before his Achilles injury

Before his year on the ATP Tour came to a heartbreaking end in Stockholm, Rune had recorded an up-and-down season.

Rune had a slow start to his 2025 campaign, but made the final at the Indian Wells Open, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev en route before falling to Draper.

In April, he enjoyed the best result of his season by winning the Barcelona Open after overcoming Carlos Alcaraz in the final, marking his fifth career tour-level title.

Following his triumph in Barcelona, though, Rune struggled to make deep runs at the biggest tournaments and only went as far as the fourth round at Grand Slams.

Towards the end of the season, Rune did come into some form, reaching back-to-back Masters quarterfinals in Cincinnati and Shanghai.

After just two matches into his indoor hard-court swing, however, he suffered the Achilles injury.
