Jessica Pegula has not had it easy at the Wuhan Open so far this year.
Pegula reached the semifinals in Beijing last week, before losing to Linda Noskova after having three match points.
Despite the disappointment of losing that match, Pegula rose one place up the WTA rankings and put herself in a good position to qualify for the WTA Finals.
However, her campaign at the Wuhan Open got off to a disastrous start, before Pegula survived her singles match against Hailey Baptiste.

Jessica Pegula wins just one game in disastrous doubles match in Wuhan
Like in Beijing, Pegula signed up to play doubles with Ashlyn Krueger, her fellow American, as well as playing singles.
Pegula and Krueger lost in the first round of the China Open, and had an even worse outcome in Wuhan.
Playing against doubles world number one Katerina Siniakova and her partner Storm Hunter, Pegula and Krueger were only able to win one game in a 6-1 6-0 defeat that lasted just 54 minutes.
The only game that Pegula and Krueger won was actually the first of the match, before they went on to lose the next 12 in a row.
Wuhan was the eighth tournament that Pegula and Krueger have played together, but they have not found much success after winning just three of their 10 matches.
While Pegula still has singles to focus on, Krueger is currently on an unwanted streak that continued after her first round loss at the Wuhan Open.

Jessica Pegula vs Ekaterina Alexandrova Head-to-Head
As Pegula continues to look to put that doubles disappointment behind her, she will now face another stern test in Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Alexandrova still has an outside chance of qualifying for the WTA Finals, and will be highly motivated to beat Pegula.
There is also the added element that Alexandrova has the advantage in the head-to-head over Pegula, including a dominant recent meeting on the clay of Stuttgart.
| Year | Tournament | Result |
| 2021 | Italian Open | Pegula beat Alexandrova, 6-2 6-4 |
| 2024 | Miami Open | Alexandrova beat Pegula, 3-6 6-4 6-4 |
| 2025 | Qatar Open | Alexandrova beat Pegula, 4-6 6-1 6-1 |
| 2025 | Charleston Open | Pegula beat Alexandrova, 6-2 2-6 7-5 |
| 2025 | Stuttgart Open | Alexandrova beat Pegula, 6-0 6-4 |
Pegula likely only needs a couple more wins to confirm her qualification to the WTA Finals for a fourth consecutive year, and will likely be using that as her motivation.
However, in both of their two previous hard court meetings it has been Alexandrova who has got the better of Pegula.
