The Wuhan Open is officially underway, with stars looking to make deep runs at the final WTA 1000 event of the season.

World number one and three-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will make her return to action at the tournament, playing for the first time on tour since winning the US Open.

Meanwhile, second seed Iga Swiatek will look to continue her largely successful Asian swing, having already clinched the Korea Open title.

For one American WTA star, however, her Wuhan Open campaign is already over, marking yet another early exit at a tour-level competiton.

US star crashes out of the Wuhan Open in the first round

US number 10 Ashlyn Krueger crashed out in Wuhan in the first round after suffering defeat to compatriot Hailey Baptiste.

Krueger was beaten 6-2, 4-6, 2-6, tallying her fourth consecutive loss, with the 21-year-old winless since the US Open.

Since her campaign at the Miami Open in March, she has not made it past the second round at any WTA event she has appeared in.

In fact, after reaching the fourth round in Miami, Krueger has only picked up eight wins, none of which have come against seeded players.

She has started the 2025 season off promisingly, reaching the Abu Dhabi Open final in February, beating eighth seed Leylah Fernandez en route.

Krueger’s form didn’t continue after her stint in the Middle East, however, and she has fallen down the rankings from 29th in the world to 50th.

At Grand Slams in 2025, Krueger has won just three matches, clinching victories in Paris, London, and New York.

She lost in the opening round of the Australian Open to home hope Ajla Tomljanovic, matching her debut result at the major in 2024.

Krueger then secured maiden wins at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, beating Suzan Lamens and Mika Stojsavljevic, respectively.

The young star could not top her best Grand Slam finish at the US Open, bowing out in the second round to Jaqueline Cristian a year after reaching round three at Flushing Meadows.
