2024 has certainly been a year of transition for the ATP Tour as the new generation well and truly arrived.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz shared this season’s four Grand Slam titles between them.
Therefore, for the first time since 2002, neither Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal nor Novak Djokovic are holding a Grand Slam title.
Many wondered who would be players to take over from the ‘Big 3’, but 2024 has been the clearest indication yet that it will be the World number one and reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion.
What changes in tennis is Jannik Sinner looking forward to taking place?
For over 20 years the ‘Big 3’ dominated men’s tennis but a new era is now well and truly underway following Sinner and Alcaraz’s success in 2024.
Before Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev at the Six Kings Slam, he expressed his excitement with the new rivalries that will unfold on the ATP Tour.
He also thinks the way the game is played is also changing, but he is relishing the challenges that will come his way and embracing any changes.
“It’s going to be a change because before there were the big three, they dominated the tennis world for 15 or 20 years which we cannot compare ourselves to them,” Sinner told DAZN Sport.
“We will try and promote it in the best possible way, hopefully there will be new rivalries which the sport needs. We have different players and mentalities on the court and off the court, which I think is nice to see.
“I personally am just happy to be part of this, trying to be ready for the next generation and I feel like tennis is evolving. It is going to be very fast and physical.
“Tournaments are quite long now, they are two week events, which is exhausting sometimes but another way it’s nice to be part of this and to be part of these rivalries, it’s exciting.”
Who will Jannik Sinner play next?
Sinner wasted no time dispatching Medvedev at the Six Kings Slam. He lost three games in a straight sets win.
The 6-3, 6-0 win marked the first time Medvedev had lost a set without winning a game since February 2020. Sinner will rake on Djokovic next, who received a bye into the next round.
“It was a very good performance considering I arrived just a couple days ago, not even. And I only had one practice session,” the Italian said afterwards. “It’s obviously a very nice moment for me.
“I worked very hard in my very young career to be in this position and this is from many, many years of work. This is what I love about being a tennis player, now I can enjoy every moment.”
