The second Grand Slam tournament of the year at Roland Garros has had a big impact on both the ATP and WTA rankings.

Carlos Alcaraz defended his Roland Garros singles title, but that did look in doubt when Jannik Sinner had three championship points.

Despite beating his rival, it is still Sinner who remains at the top of the ATP rankings ahead of Alcaraz.

The top 10 of the WTA rankings have also been altered, but women’s singles champion Coco Gauff also remains in second spot like Alcaraz.

While Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff remains unmoved, a former Wimbledon champion has taken a dramatic tumble down the rankings.

Marketa Vondrousova falls to her lowest WTA ranking in eight years

Marketa Vondrousova shocked the world when she won Wimbledon in 2023, but it has been a tricky period for the Czech WTA player since then.

The 25-year-old, who is also a former Roland Garros finalist and Olympic silver medallist, has endured many injury struggles over the past couple of years.

After losing in the first round of her Wimbledon defence last year, Vondrousova underwent surgery on her left shoulder and did not return until the start of the 2025 season.

However, injury setbacks troubled her again and Vondrousova was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open.

Vondrousova missed most of the clay court season before returning for Roland Garros where she would reach the third round.

Despite knocking out a seeded player in Paris, Vondrousova has now suffered a significant drop down the rankings after failing to defend her points from reaching the Roland Garros quarter-finals last year.

Vondrousova was already down at world number 96 and has now dropped a further 69 places to world number 165.

This is Vondrousova’s lowest WTA ranking since April 2017, when she was just 17 years old.

What is next for Marketa Vondrousova?

With the grass court season now underway, former Wimbledon champion Vondrousova will look to build her way back up the WTA rankings.

However, it does not appear that Vondrousova plans to play any grass court tournaments and is only entered into Wimbledon itself.

Vondrousova reached the round of 16 at the Berlin Open last year, and will suffer an even greater drop down the rankings in the coming weeks.

Fortunately for the former world number six, she only has 70 ranking points to defend until the end of 2025 and Vondrousova can likely climb her way back up if she can remain fit.
