Ben Shelton says he and Taylor Fritz are clear on how they plan to win their doubles matches at the Laver Cup.

The 21-year-old is set to compete in the team tournament for the second time in his career and he is keen to keep his winning run going.

Along with Frances Tiafoe, Shelton and Fritz are the three American players who will be part of Team World, and will be captained by John McEnroe for the final time.

They are looking to win the Laver Cup for the third straight year and they certainly have the firepower to cause Team Europe plenty of problems.

What did Ben Shelton say about playing doubles with Taylor Fritz at the Laver Cup?

In the 2023 Laver Cup Ben Shelton played doubles with Tiafoe and another with Felix Auger-Aliassime.

He emerged victorious in both matches but this year he will play a doubles match alongside Taylor Fritz, as they take on Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in the second match of Friday’s evening session.

Ahead of the contest, Shelton outlined exactly how he and Fritz plan to play against their opponents, who were 2024’s French Open finalists.

“We’re going to hit some bombs, take big swings and play really aggressive,” the World number 17 said.

“I know that Taylor likes that game plan, and we’re going to do what we can to bring the energy and get the first doubles win for Team World.”

McEnroe has thoroughly enjoyed being captain of Team World but once the 2024 tournament has concluded, he will hand over the reins to Andre Agassi from 2025.

His passion has shone through and has guided his team to two championships while sharing plenty of advice with the players over the years.

Before he bids farewell to the Laver Cup in this capacity, the players were able to share some kind words about McEnroe and Shelton was one of them.

“Johnny Mac has meant a lot to me being the captain. I think that he’s such a great role model for us as players, especially American players on how to carry the flag and really represent your country,” Shelton told the Laver Cup’s X account.

“So that’s someone that I’ve definitely looked up to since I’ve been part of the Laver Cup and yeah I’m really going to enjoy this last year with him.”
