What John McEnroe ‘won’t miss’ as a Laver Cup captain

McEnroe will be hoping to get the best out of the US Open runner-up, as well as the likes of compatriots Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.

The captain has certainly enjoyed his role at the Laver Cup over the years, but McEnroe is more than ready to step away.

“These players are younger than most of my kids,” McEnroe told the Laver Cup website. “As you get older, you feel like you get a little more distant from the sport itself, so that’s part of the reason I’ve really enjoyed doing this, because I just feel like a little bit more part of it for a while.

“You feel the excitement sitting on the bench at the Laver Cup, and being that close, it’s not often I get that chance anymore, very rare, actually, so I’ll miss that.

“I won’t miss the stress too much because all these guys, all 12 players and the substitute players are all very competitive, and so are the coaches.”

What role does John McEnroe play at the Laver Cup?

McEnroe will have undoubtedly been a huge help for many Laver Cup players over the years, with the seven-time major winner boasting fantastic experience in the sport.

Star names such as Nick Kyrgios and John Isner have played under the guidance of the former world number one at the team event.

But after a lengthy spell in charge, he will pass the baton onto Andre Agassi for the 2025 Laver Cup in San Francisco.

Now, however, all of his focus will be on trying to overcome Borg in Berlin and leave his captaincy on a real high.

Explaining just what he wants to do for his team members, McEnroe noted: “They all have their own coaches, [but] you try to add that little bit during that week. Anytime they want to ask me something, get some advice, I’d be more than happy to try to help out.”
