The Laver Cup is upon us and it gives tennis fans a chance to catch some of the world’s top stars in action.

Team World have won the last two tournaments, with John McEnroe’s charges demolishing Team Europe 13-2 last time out.

This year things look like being closer, with Team Europe boasting a strong squad that includes Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev.

For Team World, the chance for some players to work with McEnroe for the first time has proved very useful to their development.

He’s been there and seen it all in tennis and as a legend of the game, he’s the perfect man to be taking Team World into combat once again.

The American is on the up when it comes to the world rankings and earlier this month he reached the semi-final of the US Open,

There, he was narrowly beaten by Taylor Fritz but things do appear to be rosy for the men when it comes to tennis in America once again.

Tiafoe has been buoyed by that and it would appear that McEnroe has been helping him with something ahead of the Laver Cup getting underway.

He told the Laver Cup’s media team on X: “What I’ve learned from J Mac, the goat himself. Not a damn thing. No, I’m joking, obviously, he has old school mentality of coming forward and putting pressure on guys and to be fair that’s actually when I’m at my best. Just having that level of confidence in yourself is the biggest thing.

Tiafoe will hope to continue fine form at Laver Cup

Tiafoe is currently ranked 16 in the world and he finished the season with a flourish by reaching the last four of the US Open.

Now, the 26-year-old will hope to continue his fine form at the Laver Cup and make it three wins on the spin for Team World.

It will be a much tougher ask for McEnroe’s men this time around but it does seem clear that he’s passing on plenty of wisdom to his team.

Bjorn Borg is leading Team Europe and he hopes to get one over the man he had a fierce rivalry with as a player.

Tiafoe will relish the experience of playing tough opposition at a respected tournament and it will be fascinating to see if he adopts any of the guidance given to him by McEnroe.
