Joao Fonseca is one of the biggest young prospects on the ATP Tour at the moment.

Fonseca won his first two ATP titles this year, and has climbed over 120 places in the world rankings over the past year.

Despite his impressive breakthrough season, Fonseca has not received an ATP award for his achievements.

Awards are not the only thing Fonseca has not come out on top of, as there are four players younger than him who have won ATP matches in 2025.

The five youngest players to win an ATP match this year including Joao Fonseca

Fonseca actually won his first tour-level match this year at a Grand Slam tournament, beating Andrey Rublev with a stunning performance in the first round of the Australian Open.

The Brazilian teenager was just 18 years and 146 days when he won his first match of 2025, but there have been four players who have won matches this year even younger than Fonseca.

Where do you think Joao Fonseca will be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?

None younger in fact than Diego Dedura-Palomero, the German teenager who made history at the BMW Open in Munich earlier this year.

Despite becoming the first player born in 2008 to win an ATP match, Dedura-Palomero was criticised for his behaviour after Denis Shapovalov retired against him.

There were three other players who won an ATP match at 17 years old this year, with another German in Justin Engel beating Jan-Lennard Struff in Hamburg, while American Darwin Blanch beat former Masters 1000 champion Borna Coric, and Italian Federico Cina beat Francisco Comesana in Miami.

All of these five players are still older than the youngest ever player to win an ATP match in Franco Davin, who was 15 years and one month old when he beat Hans Gildemeister in Buenos Aires in 1983.

Coincidentally, Davin is now part of Fonseca’s team, having joined in a consultant coaching role earlier this year.

The five oldest players to win an ATP match this year including Novak Djokovic

It is clear that there are some emerging talents currently coming up on the ATP Tour, but it is also important not to forget the veteran players who are still battling away.

The most notable of those is of course 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who continues to make history even at 38 years old.

Who is the greatest male tennis player of all time?

This includes winning a match at 38 years and 170 days old, which Djokovic did to win the title in Athens after beating Lorenzo Musetti.

However, he is not the oldest player to win an ATP match this year, with Stan Wawrinka also winning a match in Athens at 40 years and 220 days old.

Despite admitting he is nearing the end of his career, Wawrinka has signed up for more tournaments in 2026.

Following Wawrinka as the oldest players to win matches this year are the now-retired Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils, who will be retiring next year, while another Frenchman Adrian Mannarino sits in fifth.

There has been a lot of speculation about when Djokovic could retire from tennis, but he has not made any announcements about that happening and he has stated his goal to play at the 2028 LA Olympics.
