Jannik Sinner will be seeking his first title at the Madrid Open this year.

Sinner was serving his three-month ban from tennis during the Madrid Open last year, and therefore has not played at the tournament since 2024.

There were even some doubts over whether the world number one would even compete in the Spanish capital this year, particularly after Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid Open.

However, Sinner has now confirmed his participation at the Madrid Open and he will be hoping for a better ending than his most recent performance in 2024.

Jannik Sinner suffered a hip injury in his last Madrid Open appearance

Sinner has never won the Madrid Open title before, despite not losing a match at the 2024 tournament.

After beating Lorenzo Sonego, Pavel Kotov and Karen Khachanov, Sinner reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open for the first time.

However, Sinner was unable to take to the court for his quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime, withdrawing due to a hip injury.

Andrey Rublev won the Madrid Open that year, in the last tournament that neither Sinner nor Alcaraz won the title where they both played.

Sinner’s other two appearances at the Madrid Open in 2021 and 2022 have seen him suffer early losses in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Jannik Sinner could move closer towards ‘completing tennis’ at the Madrid Open

With Alcaraz no longer in the field in Madrid this year, Sinner will be the overwhelming favorite to claim the title.

If Sinner is able to lift the title in Madrid then he will move even closer to winning every tournament in tennis.

The Italian has also never won a medal at the Olympics, with Sinner withdrawing from the most recent Games in Paris.
