Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Madrid Open after suffering a wrist injury.
The Spaniard sustained the injury in Monte-Carlo and has since pulled out of the Barcelona Open, where he made the final last year.
Now, Alcaraz will pass up another opportunity to close in on Jannik Sinner and recapture world number one status after withdrawing from the second clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Alcaraz said: “There are some news that are incredibly hard to share.
“Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row.
“It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon.”

Alcaraz missed last year’s edition of the Madrid Open due to an adductor injury he picked up in the 2025 Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune, which he lost.
His withdrawal from this season’s tournament follows that of Novak Djokovic, who also announced on Friday he won’t compete due to physical struggles.

Alcaraz is set to protect a total of 3000 points throughout the Italian Open and Roland Garros, meaning the gap between him and Sinner will widen should the world number one triumph at both while he is sidelined through injury.
