Jannik Sinner is the new Wimbledon champion, and his success must be celebrated rather than causing panic or worry.

Tennis fans may have been worried that the men’s game was heading for a real downfall amid the gradual disappearance of the so-called Big Four.

Roger Federer retired first in 2022, followed by Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray last year, while Novak Djokovic won’t be too far behind.

But Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have more than stepped up to the mark, and fans should be glad that it was the Italian who triumphed in their latest battle.

The ATP number one fell behind early to the Spaniard on Centre Court, but recovered to win their Wimbledon final 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Jannik Sinner winning the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz is great for tennis

The pair have now combined to win each of the last seven Grand Slam titles, along with eight of the last nine.

And some form of balance has now been restored between them after Sinner’s victory, with Alcaraz having been threatening to become the totally dominant force.

He was enjoying a career-best 24-match winning streak before coming face to face with his rival in London, and really did look like clinching a third successive Wimbledon title.

Intriguingly, however, the burden will quickly fall upon Alcaraz to keep their stunning Grand Slam run alive.

If he does exactly that, he will join Sinner in each player winning four of the last eight Grand Slam titles on offer.

For now, however, the latest edition of Wimbledon certainly keeps this fantastic rivalry more competitive and thus more interesting for the future.

Although they remain at relatively brief stages of their exciting careers, Sinner and Alcaraz are already very familiar with one another.

They have now met a total of 13 times on the ATP Tour, and it is the Spaniard who holds the bragging rights at this stage.

Alcaraz has won eight of their 13 matches, although Sinner will be grateful to have just ended his five-match losing streak to his fierce rival.

And epitomising their fantastic rivalry is the fact that their last four meetings have all arrived in finals, two of which have been at Grand Slam level.

The pair are clearly pushing one another to be better, which is great for the current top two players in the world but very scary for the rest of the ATP Tour.

At the same time, however, both Sinner and Alcaraz would likely welcome a fresh face to challenge their current dominance, but whether that can happen remains to be seen.
