Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remain the players to beat on the ATP Tour, having continued their dominance in the 2025 season.

Alcaraz and Sinner have impressed Roger Federer, with the duo each winning two Grand Slam titles this season among other impressive accomplishments.

They achieved the same feat last season, and currently occupy the top two spots in the ATP Tour rankings.

And worryingly for the rest of the ATP Tour, Alcaraz and Sinner are by no means finished in their respective seasons.

The former is currently in Tokyo for the Japan Open, while the latter is in Beijing for the China Open, where he lost last year’s final to Alcaraz.

The clear frontrunner to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

The tournaments continue the build-up to the ATP Finals in November, where Alcaraz and Sinner will undoubtedly be the players to beat.

But Taylor Fritz does look capable of upsetting the pair at the season-ending event, and on the ATP Tour in general, even with his current world number five ranking.

Fritz is also in Tokyo, and like Alcaraz picked up a win in his opening match, defeating Gabriel Diallo 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7-3).

It represents his 46th win of the year, a figure that is second only to Alcaraz, while he also ranks second for the most hard-court wins.

But the American tops the pile for the most matches won since the start of the grass-court season, and only just secured a first-ever career win over Alcaraz.

Fritz stunned Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, producing one of the best displays of his career, and followed that up with a win over Alexander Zverev.

Boris Becker thinks Jack Draper could challenge Sinner and Alcaraz, but that potential challenge won’t come anytime soon.

Draper has already ended his season, with an arm injury forcing the British number one off the court for the foreseeable future.

It’s one of many issues experienced by Draper despite his brief career so far, with such issues certain to prevent him from posing a real threat on the ATP Tour if they continue.

Meanwhile despite sitting third in the world rankings, Alexander Zverev has more questions to answer after a disappointing display at the Laver Cup.

Moreover, the German has lost all three of his Grand Slam final appearances, which include defeats against both Sinner and Alcaraz.

Novak Djokovic was perhaps another potential candidate to challenge the leading duo, but he has continuously fallen short against them in recent times.

At 38, his shortcomings are perfectly understandable, but his likely impending retirement means the baton must be passed on to a much younger figure.

Joao Fonseca certainly has the potential to be that player, with the teenager having enjoyed a rapid rise on the ATP Tour.

Fonseca helped Team World win the Laver Cup earlier this month, is in the ATP top 50 and has one title to his name aged 19, while his huge following will also give him plenty of confidence against the big guns.

But Fonseca wasn’t picked to play Alcaraz in San Francisco, and it would be unfair to hand him the burden of trying to rival the Spaniard and Sinner at this stage of his career.
