Taylor Fritz was a crucial player for Team World at the Laver Cup, helping them defeat Team Europe in San Francisco.

Fritz experienced an important Laver Cup, which involved claiming five points from his three matches played.

The American shone on home soil, with Fritz fittingly clinching the winning points with his singles victory over Alexander Zverev.

That arrived after a hard-fought win over Carlos Alcaraz, who finished the week as joint-top points scorer alongside Alex de Minaur.

Led by captain Andre Agassi, Team World claimed a third Laver Cup title, and will be out to defend their trophy in London in 2026.

Jack Sock predicts what is about to happen to Taylor Fritz after his Laver Cup success

Fritz now moves on to the Japan Open, where he is aiming to win his third ATP title of 2025 and the 11th of his career.

First, however, he has received praise from two former players for his superb performances in San Francisco.

Jack Sock said on the Nothing Major Show: “I think Fritz is the guy who has a first round in Beijing at 10am and he is ready to go and stoked to play, let alone the Laver Cup in that moment at that stage.

“He is ready to go at all times, 365 days a year it feels like. It showed. He wants that moment and to try get those wins.

“I think even though he is a top five player in the world, he still wants to prove himself to everyone ranked ahead of him and right around him and he showed it.

“It was awesome to watch. He played the best tennis we have probably ever seen him play and then backs it up with a huge win on Sunday as well over Zverev.

“I think it might catapult him into an amazing Fall and probably some huge results as well, if he takes that confidence away.”

Steve Johnson praises Taylor Fritz’s ‘masterclass’ at the Laver Cup

Fritz was forced to dig deep at the Laver Cup, having lost his opening match alongside fellow American Alex Michelsen.

They were defeated 6-7(7-9), 4-6 by Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik on day one, after which Europe took a 3-1 lead.

But Fritz showed his experience, talent and determination to beat Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 on day two, and Zverev 6-3, 7-6(7-4) on day three.

Sharing his verdict on the Laver Cup hero, Steve Johnson said: “He played insane against Carlos. The court looked so slow from TV, but that is good for Taylor.

“He is somebody who can absolutely smash the ball off both sides of the racket, stand in the middle of the court and just throw haymakers whenever he wants.

“He strikes the ball so cleanly. I think that was a huge factor for him because it is hard to break the sidelines and get Carlos out of position.

“But when Taylor is standing in the middle and just dominating like that, that was just a work of art. If that doesn’t give Taylor the confidence to go and win a Slam, not that he didn’t have it already, but to finally get a win over Carlos.

“At least in this format, and you will have some people say it doesn’t count because it’s Laver Cup but whatever, that has got to help Taylor’s confidence in thinking I can beat this guy.

“Here is a blueprint. I may not repeat this type of tennis every time we go out there. But the level was insane and there was zero doubt in anyone’s mind, I don’t even think Zverev thought that he could win on Sunday.

“There was no doubt that Taylor was going to win that. That was a beautiful, masterclass of tennis for the two days that he was out there playing singles.”

The week should be a huge boost for Fritz, although he has little time to celebrate the title and indeed his first-ever win over Alcaraz.

He now takes on Gabriel Diallo in the opening round of the Japan Open in Tokyo, where he is the second seed.
