Carlos Alcaraz has set up another blockbuster final against Jannik Sinner, but could this actually be an issue for men’s tennis.
Alcaraz beat Felix Auger-Aliassime to confirm that the final of the ATP Finals would be contested between the two best players in men’s tennis once again.
This will be the sixth final contested between them this year, with Alcaraz beating Sinner at the US Open in their most recent.
While there have been some classic matches, highlighted by the thrilling French Open final between Alcaraz and Sinner, their dominance may actually be doing the ATP Tour more harm than good.

Men’s tennis could now be facing a big problem related to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
There is no doubt that matches between Alcaraz and Sinner are nearly always entertaining, and they draw eyes from around the world.
While the quality of the matches between Alcaraz and Sinner is not in question, the matches that come beforehand in tournaments appear to be the issue.
This was highlighted by Sinner’s semifinal victory over Alex de Minaur at the ATP Finals, which has extended his dominance over the Australian to 13-0.
As a result of another final being created between Alcaraz and Sinner, some tennis fans have admitted they are bored by the current predictability of men’s tennis.
One person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Men’s tennis is so predictable and boring.”
This started a conversation on the social media platform, with tennis fans contributing lots of varying opinions on the topic.
One person added, “Honestly I love tennis with my whole heart but it’s either Jannik or Carlos nowadays.”
Another said that they have even stopped watching finals, “Haven’t watched a single tour final match lol and have ZERO fomo (fear of missing out).”
The big three of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer also dominated the ATP Tour in the 21st century, but an additional social media user pointed out the difference between them and Alcaraz and Sinner.
They wrote, “It is way too predictable at the moment. Guys in the top 10 can only challenge Sinner and Alcaraz for a set or so. In the big three era although they dominated they still would sometimes lose to top 20 guys especially in best of three format.”
The current predictability of men’s tennis is even more evident when you draw comparisons to the WTA Tour, which has seen four different Grand Slam champions this year.
Is another Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner final good for men’s tennis?
The only two tournaments Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both played this year where they did not meet in the final
Alcaraz and Sinner have won the last eight major titles, and only one player has been in a Grand Slam final other than the top two ranked players on the ATP Tour.
The Australian Open final was the only championship match at a Grand Slam this year which was not contested between Alcaraz and Sinner.
However, after Alcaraz was beaten by Novak Djokovic, Sinner still won the Australian Open title after beating Alexander Zverev in the final.
| Tournament | Player who lost before the final | Player who won the title |
| Australian Open | Alcaraz lost to Novak Djokovic (QF) | Jannik Sinner (Beat Alexander Zverev in the final) |
| Paris Masters | Alcaraz lost to Cameron Norrie (R32) | Jannik Sinner (Beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final) |
That is one of only two tournaments this year that both Alcaraz and Sinner played where they did not end up playing in the final.
The second of those came more recently, with Alcaraz losing to Cameron Norrie at the Paris Masters.
Like at the Australian Open, the rest of the ATP Tour were unable to take advantage and Sinner won the Paris Masters title, showing the big problem that men’s tennis currently has.
